Purpose
Statement
My purpose for this photo
essay is to open people up to all that is around them on a daily basis. My
audience will consist of young adults still in search for the best way to live
their lives. People are focused on what they want and what they don’t have. I
want to show, through this presentation, that although wanting can be a good
thing, we have to first begin to appreciate all that we have. I am obviously
guilty of taking the things in my life for granted and I hope this makes me a
more relatable source for presenting this information. I believe that being
able to appreciate what you have is essential in the journey of achieving what
you want.
Design
Plan
Strategies:
·
Ethos- I want to come across as a peer to
my audience, seeing as that is exactly what I am. My audience will consist of
my classmates, intelligent and capable young people. I don’t want to come
across as if I am telling the audience they are doing something wrong, because
we are all guilty of taking things for granted. I want to just share the things
in our lives that are readily available to us and show the beauty in
opportunity.
·
Pathos- I intend to create a sense of
motivation within my audience. I want them to leave the classroom feeling encouraged
to see the beauty in the world around them. I also want them to feel as if
everything they see and experience on a daily basis is more special than they
have ever been.
·
Logos- I will structure this presentation
from least to most compelling pictures. (Hopefully they will all be
compelling). I want to end with the most relatable to the audience so as to
leave them thinking about the overall message and purpose of the photo essay.
Medium: I will be using
pictures, as well as narrative writing for this assignment. I am hoping the
picture will be able to tell the story, and the words of the essay will
effortlessly match up with what the pictures say.
Arrangement: I will
arrange the in order of least to most captivating as stated before. But, I want
to start and end with my most interesting pictures. Going about the set up in a
“2,3,4,5,1” arrangement. I want to engage the audience right from the start and
keep their attention with logical coherence and interesting thought, then end
with the best example of the point I am trying to make. For the narrative
essay, I will follow the usual essay structure of introduction, body, and
conclusion. I will write the body first, then proceed to write the introduction
claim and conclusion based on what the body paragraphs entails. I will also use
different fonts to create a sense of difference in the photos, seeing as half
of them will represent want and the other half will represent what we have.
Testing: In order to test
my project and have a better understanding of how my audience will respond, I
will show my model the pictures, just like Ajay did, to see if they have a
grasp on what the message in saying. For the narrative essay, I will read it
aloud to myself and to other people several times in order to catch grammatical
mistakes and consistency issues.
The Rhetorical Analysis
Purpose Statement:
Purpose: It is said that all romantic comedies tend to
follow similar story lines, and that can be true in many cases. But, every
movie differs in some way or another. These film posters will help to show how,
although they are all the same genre, each movie has its own unique spin on a
journey to find love. These unique aspects are what cause the audience to go
see the movie. Therefore, the uniqueness must be clearly present in the movie
poster. I will analyze the posters in order to bring to my audience’s attention
the individuality of each one.
Audience: My
audience will consist of my classmates. Some of my peers may have seen these
movies or have at least heard of them. Romantic Comedies are typically more
popular with a female audience, but I believe that the boys in the class will
find that they know some of the actors and actresses in the films. Hopefully,
this will cause them to be more interested.
Context: This
project will be presented in a classroom setting. The context will include the
findings of each individual movie poster. I hope that the class will find that
each movie has its own unique qualities.
Design
Plan:
Strategies:
§ Ethos- I have seen
all of these movies several times and have plenty of knowledge on what the
creator of the movie posters was trying to present to movie goers. As a movie
goer, once I see a movie it allows me to understand the meaning of the poster
better.
§ Pathos- The facts
that every single movie poster has a couple on it presents the obvious
emotional aspect of love. I will analyze the interaction of each couple.
§ Logos- I will
logically go through each aspect of the movie posters to draw as many
conclusions as possible in order to back up my purpose (finding the
individuality) in evaluating them.
Medium/Media: The
reason for writing this paper is because it was assigned to me in this class. I
choose the movie posters of five romantic comedies. The movies go as follow:
- While You
Were Sleeping (1995)
- The Wedding
Planner (2001)
- How to Lose a
Guy in 10 Days (2003)
- The Wedding
Date (2005)
- A Lot like
Love (2005)
Arrangement:
·
I
will discuss the placement, font, and size of the title on each movie poster
and how it either helps of hurts the overall presentation.
·
I
will discuss the placement and interaction of the couples in each poster and
how they help or hurt the overall presentation.
·
I
will also look at how the coloring, angling, and background images play a part
in the posters.
·
I
will discuss the statement (catch phrase) on each of the movie posters and
discuss whether or not they are captivating.
I will, for each movie,
begin by discussing the title, coloring, pictures, and the more obvious
aspects. Then, I will begin to dig deeper, to find the reason for the maker’s
creative choices. By going from obvious to more intricate realizations, I will
hopefully engage my readers to keep reading. I will also discuss if the
creators decisions were effective in attracting an audience or not. The visual
helps deepen the understanding of the text
Visual/Text:
I
think both the text and the visual are important in evaluating the movie
posters. The visual is the most important aspect because it takes up most of
the poster and helps to draw in the viewer’s attention, so that they read the
poster. They do complement each other because the text help to further explain
what is happening in the visual or the visual helps to illustrate the text. The
visual helps to deepen the understanding because it allows you put an image in
your head of what to expect. In these movie posters, if the visual was to be
missing, the text would seem empty and unimportant.
Communication:
I will produce the
communication through finding the best way to connect to my audience. This
topic attracts more of a female audience, as I have stated before. But, I will
focus on certain aspects of the poster’s to create an interesting essay for
both male and female audience members. I will start by focusing on the
interaction between the couples and how it effects the audiences want or desire
to see the movie.
Testing:
In
order to test my projects effectiveness of communication I will present my
finished product to my peers, male and female, to get their genuine critiques.
I will then take those critiques to improve my project as a whole.
The Research Synthesis
Purpose
Statement:
The purpose of my researched
synthesis essay is to present censorship, in the high school world, as a
disservice to the students I hope to show that students can learn and grow in
their quest for knowledge and from reading what may be deemed by some as “controversial”.
I want to help people to see the possibility that a high school student has the
capability to grow, both intellectually and as a person through the use of
serious topics and issues in young adult literature. I also want to discuss the
parents and the teacher’s impact and presence in the discussion and topic. Mu
audience will consist of my fellow classmates who have all recently graduated
high school and can remember a time where banned books were the topic of
conversation in the English class. They all have their opinion, and I hope to
open their eyes to the pros of not censoring.
Design Plan:
Design Plan:
Strategies: In
order to accomplish my purpose statement I will use the Ethos, Pathos, and Logos
appeals to arrange my essay.
·
Ethos:
I will cite my source and create a work cited page to assure that my
information is well backed up. I will write with confidence and conviction and
make informed and coherent statements in support of my claims.
·
Pathos:
I will explain the controversial and debated status of my topic, which is
censorship in high schools. I will create the sense of parental worry, and the
fact that teachers want to help their students. I will also show the positive
outcomes of reading about serious topics, such as sex and violence.
·
Logos:
I will organize my points in a way that is easy for my audience to follow. I
will have thorough support and well written statement.
Media: The reason I
am writing this paper is because it was assigned to me in class. I will be
talking about the presence of censorship in high schools.
Arrangement:
·
I
will start with discussing the existence of overprotective parents,
·
Then
I’ll discuss how teachers want to help students grow and learn,
·
I
will dive into sex in young adult literature,
·
As
well as the presence of violence.
Communication: I will
communicate to my audience by making the first two body paragraphs about the parents
and the teachers and their role in the issue. Then I will end the body by
discussing some of the actual issues that cause the reaction the parents and
teachers have. Throughout the entire essay, I will discuss how the students fit
into each aspect of the issue of censorship in these schools because it exists
because of them,
Testing: I will test the effectiveness of the essay
through reading it to myself and to other people in order to find issues in the
writing and the point I am trying to make.
